1) What is a combined cycle?

The Combined Cycle is the combination of two techniques of electricity production. The first technique related to the "Gas turbine" (GT) consists in producing electricity from the expansion of the combustion gases. The second technique related to the “Steam Turbine” (ST) uses the expansion of the steam. In the Combined Cycle, the exhaust gases of the GT are recuperated in "boilers" to produce steam at high pressure (between 50 and 100 bar) and at high temperature (more than 500°C) used to activate the steam turbine.

2) Why is the combined cycle more efficient?

The total average output of a Combined Cycle is about 50% whereas it is only 30% for a gas turbine and 40% for a steam turbine. This represents an important saving in natural gas. The boilers are equipped with a system of "additional firing" which increases of power of Combined Cycle from 360 to 470 MW. The pure water (demineralised), which is used in the boilers to produce steam, is obtained from seawater and is desalinated in the water treatment plant mainly by using the two techniques of "opposite osmosis" and “electric deionisation”.

3) What are the major safety measures applied within the site?

Periodic tests of the components, equipments, systems and fire fighting.
Strict application of the security instructions during the execution of various maintenance works on the site.
Safety training of the staff at the STIR fire school and first aid (Civil Protection).
Periodic meetings with the personnel and targeted meetings before major outages.
Attendance of the subcontractors is also required at all meeting.

4) Is there a plan of crisis management?

The company is equipped with an Internal Plan for Operation (I.P.O.); it defines and describes all the actions to be taken if a serious incident occurs.
Emergency and evacuation plans are carried out regularly .
